Today, you can walk out of a dealership with an electric SUV for less than $40,000. While the Inflation Reduction Act has made the EV tax credit more complicated, we've pointed out the several options which might qualify for it in 2023.

2023 Electric SUVs
These electric SUVs are either currently available right now or very soon. There are quite a few options, including Teslas, Audis, Mercedes, Chevrolets, and others. Remember, all pricing, range, and release date mentions apply to the U.S. market only. Let's see what's available in the electric SUV category for 2023.
2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E
The Ford Mustang Mach-e has proven itself as one of the best new Ford crossovers. Unlike other Ford models, the Mach-e has a near-completely bespoke interior, making it feel much more different from your typical Ford. With the entry-level battery and base single motor rear-drive setup, the Mach-e can go 247 miles on a single charge. In longest range form, the Extended Range AWD model can achieve up to 314 miles. Moreover, the 2021 Mach-E was the first mass produced non-Tesla to break the 300-mile threshold.

2022 Audi e-tron
Ever since 2019, the Audi e-tron has been one of the most solid electric SUV options on the market. The stylish crossover features a conservatively designed exterior complementing a pleasantly laid-out interior composed of high-quality materials. The e-tron is also a very pleasant driving machine with quick acceleration and air suspension as standard. Audi offers an S variant of the e-tron packing up to 469 horsepower. Though, it comes with a hefty $88,200 tag.
For the 2024 model year, Audi will rebadge the e-tron as the Q8 e-tron. The Q8 e-tron will feature improved range and updated styling.

2022 Audi Q4 e-tron
The Q4 e-tron is Audi's lowest-priced EV yet, priced $20,000 under the current e-tron. But that isn't saying much considering Audi's recent price jumps. Originally set to cost $43,900, the Q4 now starts at $49,800 in rear-wheel-drive form. Sharing the same MEB platform as the Volkswagen ID.4, the Q4 shares similar specifications, including the 150kW DC fast charging acceptance and the optional 295 horsepower dual motor powertrain.

2024 Audi Q8 e-tron
While the original Audi e-tron was a commendable electric crossover, there was more to desire in terms of range and performance. The 2024 Q8 e-tron is set to ameliorate the original's shortcomings with a larger 114kWh battery pack that will bring the range figure past the 300 mile mark, according to Audi. The performance-oriented SQ8 e-tron will bring 496 horsepower to the table, making it Audi's most powerful electric crossover yet. With the substantial improvements across the board, we expect the pricing to unfortunately reflect that. We predict a higher starting price than the outgoing model, but likely staying under the $80,000 mark.

2023 BMW iX
The iX is the BMW's first electric SUV available in the United States. With sharp angles and unique design elements, the iX's design sets itself apart from the crowd. Underneath the floor is a huge 111.5kWh battery pack allowing for a maximum range of 324 miles with the base 20" wheels. Mated to the battery pack are dual motors producing a total of 516 horsepower, yielding a 0-60 time of just 4.4 seconds. Above the base xDrive50 model is the M60 variant, which boosts power to 610, bringing the 0-60 run down to just 3.6 seconds.

2023 Cadillac Lyriq
Cadillac is not new to EVs, in fact, they made a coupe called the ELR based on the Volt architecture back in 2014. Unlike the ELR, the Lyriq is an SUV based on the Ultium platform set to compete with the Q8 e-tron and BMW iX, but with a much lower entry price. Coming in at $60,000 for the base RWD variant, the Lyriq comes with an array of features. It has a 33-inch display, a 19-speaker AKG audio system, Supercruise, and more.

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV
Despite the Bolt EUV being the most affordable SUV on this list, it likely offers the best options to price ratio in the entire market. Starting at just $27,200, the Bolt EUV undercuts competitors like the Kia Niro EV by over $10,000. It a far more substantial interior, available Super Cruise (no lane change), and many more available interior amenities like a panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats.

Chevrolet Blazer EV
GM's answer to the Ford Mustang Mach-E is the Blazer EV. The electric Blazer touts a muscular stance with sharp proportions and massive wheels. A $65,995 SS variant of the Blazer EV will also be available, making a beefy 557 horsepower through a dual-motor AWD setup. FWD and RWD drivetrains will be available on other, less expensive trims.

Chevrolet Equinox EV
While the Bolt EUV offers superb pricing and an admiral number of features, its compact size may deter some potential buyers. The Equinox EV will alleviate that. At 190.5 inches from bumper to bumper, the Equinox EV is 21 inches longer than the Bolt EUV. Besides the size, the Equinox EV also comes with a multitude of extras. Unlike the Bolt EUV, the Equinox EV's charge speed reaches 150kW and has an optional AWD drivetrain, generating 290 horsepower.

2023 Fisker Ocean
Henrik Fisker, the former CEO of Fisker Automotive and now CEO of Fisker Inc., has decided to enter an entirely different industry sector. Instead of releasing an ultra-luxury hybrid sedan with a six-figure tag, Fisker is releasing the Ocean, a crossover priced under $37,499. With a healthy array of standard features and a captivating design, the Ocean is certainly an intriguing offering. Early models will be built at Magna's Graz manufacturing facility.

2023 Genesis GV60
Sharing the same underpinnings as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, the GV60 is the luxury option. Coming in at just under $60,000, the GV60 has plenty of standard amenities like a crystal drive selector, fingerprint recognition, ventilated leather seats, Bang and Olufsen audio, and remote parking assist. Overall, the GV60 is one the most equipped EVs for under $60,000.

2023 Genesis Electrified GV70
Similar to the Electrified G80, the Electrified GV70 shares a platform with its gasoline-powered counterpart. Unlike the regular GV70, the EV will make 108 more horsepower than the top spec twin turbo V6 variant. Moreover, the Electrified GV70 will offer the brand's same 800V charging, allowing for a 10-80% charge in around 20 minutes. Unlike the GV60, the Electrified GV70 blends into the traffic and doesn't scream "EV."

2023 GMC Hummer SUV Edition 1
Once the GMC Hummer SUV Edition 1 releases, it will be one of the most capable electric SUVs available. Like the pickup version, the tri-motor powertrain and all its quirky features, like Crabwalk, will come in the SUV. Zero to sixty in “Watts to Freedom” mode should take just 3.5 seconds in the SUV, whereas the pickup can do 3. The only feature not mentioned is third-row seating, which most would expect in an SUV of this size.

2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5
The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an excellent electric crossover with one feature that blows its competitors out of the water: 800V charging technology. Unlike most cars of its ilk, the Ioniq 5 features a battery capable of 800 volts, meaning that charging is far more efficient. On a 350kW DC fast charger, it'll take just 18 minutes to achieve a 10-80% charge. While the charging is impressive, the base SE Standard Range model leaves more to be desired. The Standard Range model makes just 168 horsepower in a 3,968 crossover, yielding a lower power-to-weight ratio than a Kia Rio.

2023 Hyundai Kona Electric
The Kona Electric was Hyundai's first electric crossover, and it shares its platform with the similarly-priced Kia Niro EV. With decent acceleration, a nice interior, and an industry-leading 5-year basic warranty, the Kona Electric is a good option. Though, with the 2023 Bolt EUV's price drop, the Kona Electric is more difficult to justify, considering it runs a $6,350 premium over its American counterpart. However, Hyundai is planning on combatting it with a redesigned entry for the 2024 model year.

2023 Jaguar i-Pace
For the outgoing 2022 model year, Jaguar mildly updated the i-Pace with slight design tweaks and many more features for the same price. Instead of offering multiple trims, like the S, SE, and HSE, Jaguar now just offers the HSE for $71,300, which includes tons of options.
The 2023 i-Pace is also equipped with Jaguar's latest infotainment system, called the Pivo Pro. What hasn't changed is the dual-motor setup making 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of torque. Along with good on-road performance, the i-Pace offers air suspension as standard, allowing for up to 8.5 inches of ground clearance.

2023 Kia Niro EV
For the 2023 model year, Kia updated the Niro lineup with sharper, more distinct styling along with improved range. Sharing the same platform as the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Niro EV is slightly larger and more expensive. With 253 miles of range and a DC fast charging rate of 85kW, the Niro EV outperforms the Bolt EUV's 247 miles of range and 50kW charging speeds. Though, the Niro EV's price is nowhere near that of the Bolt EUV. In fact, its MSRP runs $12,250 more than that of the EUV.

2023 Kia EV6
Based on the same platform underneath its Ioniq 5 cousin, the 2023 Kia EV6 is a sporty, low swung crossover with an entirely different design language. Unlike the Ioniq 5, the EV6 currently comes in a GT variant with an earth shattering 576 horsepower (though an Ioniq 5 N is due in 2023). From producing mediocre economy cars to now selling supercar defeating crossovers, it's clear that Kia is going through a massive rebrand.

2024 Lotus Eletre
After Geely acquired the majority stake in Lotus in 2017, the brand's creativity flourished. Having access to more production facilities and engineering teams means that Lotus can make more intriguing products. The Eletre is one of them. Starting at under $100,000 and featuring a striking design backed up by 800V battery tech, the Lotus Eletre is a far cry from the brand's small sports cars of the past. Lotus plans on it arriving stateside by mid-2023.

2023 Nissan Ariya
After over a decade of Leaf production, Nissan has decided to enter the electrified crossover segment with the Ariya. Unlike the Leaf, the Ariya finally features a liquid-cooled pack and CCS fast charging, rather than the air-cooled pack and CHAdeMO port. There's also a long-range pack available that goes up to 304 miles on a charge, according to the EPA. Size-wise, the Ariya sits two inches shorter than the Rogue.

2022 Mazda MX-30
Despite the elegant styling, the 2022 Mazda MX-30 just doesn't have much to offer. Priced the same as a well-equipped Chevrolet Bolt EUV, the MX-30 has 57 fewer horsepower and over half the range. Where the MX-30 succeeds is in its solid build quality and pleasant interior, but its eight deliveries in Q3 2022 prove that buyers are looking for more in the little Mazda crossover.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB
Spec-wise, the EQB isn't all too notable. Though, it's a decent offering from the German auto giant with optional third row seating. It lacks in terms of its charging, which tops out at just 110kW, and it barely makes it to the 250 mile mark. But buyers willing to sacrifice range, performance, and charging for driving comfort will maybe see its value.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV
The 2023 Mercedes Benz EQE SUV is the SUV variant of the EQE sedan. Subject to the unremarkable design language of the other EQ vehicles, the EQE SUV doesn't stand out in the looks department. But the EQE has a trick up its sleeve: it's manufactured in Alabama, allowing it to possibly qualify for the $7,500 tax credit, provided it starts at under $80,000 and upholds the battery component legislature. Regardless, the EQE SUV will compete with the Q8 e-tron and likely hold similar specs.

2023 Mercedes Benz EQS SUV
In terms of range, looks, and performance, the Mercedes EQS SUV isn't revolutionary. But that's not what it's trying to be. The EQS SUV is simply a large luxury SUV focused on driver and passenger comfort. It comes with an array of features as standard, such as a Burmester 3D sound system, rear axle steering, and a panoramic roof. But that luxury comes at a cost. Some may think these extras compensate for the lack of AWD on the base model, a feature that virtually all its competitors offer.

2024 Polestar 3
Polestar’s foundation in the United States market is quickly growing, but just selling the 2 sedan isn't enough to gain substantial brand awareness. The Polestar 3 is a luxury SUV set to challenge the BMW iX, Audi Q8 e-tron, and the Mercedes EQS SUV. Utilizing the same platform as the Volvo EX90, the Polestar 3 can go up to 300 miles on a charge. As for performance, the 3 has 489 horsepower as standard, and the Performance Pack will boost that figure to 517.

2022 Rivian R1S
The Rivian R1S is the SUV version of the R1T, and it costs $5,000 more than the truck. With third row seating as standard and 15 inches of ground clearance, the R1S is a true SUV. Complementing the ground clearance is a substantial wading depth of over 3 feet. With its optional quad-motor powertrain, the R1S will be able to execute a "Tank Turn" and accelerate to sixty miles per hour in just 3 seconds.

2023 Subaru Solterra
Subaru and Toyota have jointly worked together to develop an electric platform for both the Solterra and the bZ4X. Interestingly, this isn't Subaru's first electrified model based on a Toyota platform. The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid actually utilizes components from the Prius Prime. The Solterra's specs are nearly copied and pasted from the Toyota bZ4X, but the Subaru arrives with a heftier price, thanks to AWD as standard.

2023 Tesla Model Y
The 2023 Tesla Model Y is still commonly regarded as one of the best all around electric crossovers. From the Supercharging network to Tesla's solid performance figures, the Model Y checks virtually all the boxes. However, with a hefty price tag of $65,990, the Y's price is far out of the pricing bounds of the ID.4 and Mach-E. But there is good news. While the Tesla Model Y might qualify for the full $7,500 IRA EV tax credit, Tesla is currently offering some discounts itself. Buyers who take delivery by December 31, 2022 will receive a $7,500 credit towards their purchase. Effectively, this brings the price down to a more digestible, but still expensive price of $58,490.

2023 Tesla Model X
In 2021, the Tesla Model X received its first refresh with an updated design and increased range, power, and efficiency. Now the base 2023 Tesla Model X goes zero to sixty in 3.8 seconds and has 360 miles of range. Then there's the Plaid. The Tesla Model X Plaid makes a jaw-dropping 1,020 horsepower and can demolish a quarter-mile in less than ten seconds. But both models come at a big price. The 2023 Model X Dual Motor starts at $120,990 and the Plaid brings that figure up to $138,990.

2023 Toyota bZ4X
The 2023 bZ4x is the Japanese auto giant's first electric crossover not built with Tesla underpinnings. Suffering recalls early in its U.S. market launch, the bZ4x had a relatively rough start. Offering a standard glass roof and an array of included safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane centering assist, the base model's $42,000 price is quite reasonable. But the bZ4x lags behind the competition with its 100kW charging for AWD models and its seemingly underpowered maximum output of 214 horsepower.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4
Possibly one of Volkswagen's most ardent vehicles yet, the ID.4 is America's first VW sold based on the MEB platform. Unlike the electrified Niro and Kona, the ID.4 offers two motor layouts: a 200 horsepower RWD and a 302 horsepower AWD configuration.
The ID.4 is six inches shorter than the Mach-e, but it still provides ample interior space and a nicely laid-out interior. Compared to its main competition, it is noticeably more sluggish, and there is no front trunk or an option for one-pedal driving.

2023 VinFast VF8
While our media drive of the preproduction VF8 in Vietnam left more to be desired, VinFast went on to deliver the electric crossover in December 2022. The brand's current offering, the VF8 City Edition, starts at a discounted price of just above $50,000 and offers an unimpressive 179 miles of range. Though, VinFast is planning on releasing a longer range variant in 2023.

2024 VinFast VF9
From our early impressions in Vietnam, the VF9 felt far more substantial than its smaller VF8 counterpart. While we didn't drive the VF9, VinFast says it'll house a 123kWh battery pack and two electric motors generating 402 horsepower. The VF9 will sit up to seven people, thanks to a standard third row. But with an $83,000 starting price, it's not going to have an easy start in the market, especially when considering it's in the pricing territory of a highly-equipped Audi e-tron.

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge
The Volvo C40 Recharge is the coupe-variant of the electrified XC40. It shares the same platform with the Polestar 2 and the XC40 Recharge. This platform gives the C40 402 horsepower, which results in a nippy zero-to-sixty run of just 4.5 seconds. Compared to the XC40, the C40 features a slightly more aerodynamic design, with a minimal range improvement of 3 miles.

2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge
The XC40 Recharge is Volvo's most powerful XC40, with a staggering 215 horsepower jump over the base gasoline-powered variant. The XC40 Recharge is the group's Compact Modular Architecture platform, present in the Polestar 2 and several other Geely products.
The only compromise with the XC40 is the 223 miles of range, which puts it around the Standard AWD Mach-e and Audi e-tron territory. Aside from the range, the XC40 Recharge has a conventional design, great interior comfort, and excellent overall build quality.

Future Electric SUVs
The electric SUV segment has expanded significantly for the 2022 and 2023 model year, but there is more to come. For 2024, there should be many more compelling entries hitting the streets. Whether its from a legacy automaker or a startup, the market will fulminate tremendously. If you can wait until 2024 to buy an electric SUV, then your choices will be vast.
2024 Audi Q6 e-tron
Little is known about Audi's upcoming electric crossover, but spy shots reveal that the Q6 e-tron is in the works. Since the Q6 e-tron looks to be sized in between the Q4 e-tron and the regular e-tron SUV, the price is expected to be somewhere in the middle too. Its expected release date is in 2023, and once it releases, Audi will have three electric SUVs in its American lineup.

2024 Hyundai IONIQ 7
The IONIQ 7 is will be Hyundai's first large SUV based on the E-GMP platform. Similar to the EV6, Ioniq 5, and the Genesis GV70, the Ioniq 7 will feature the brand's signature 800V architecture and V2L functionality. Unlike its smaller Ioniq 5 sibling, the 7 will feature a less blocky design and a horizontal front light bar.

2024 Karma GX-1
The Karma GX-1 is set to be Karma Automotive's first SUV. Like the GS Series, Karma has decided to produce a fully electric and a range-extended model. The fully electric GX-1 should achieve around 300 miles on a single charge. Unlike the GS Series, which starts at $80,000, the GX-1 Series is speculated to start at a lower price point. We haven't heard much of anything since the initial rumors in 2021, but we do know that it was in the works.

2024 Kia EV9
Using the same underpinnings as the Hyundai Ioniq 7, the Kia EV9 will boast a similar form factor and third row seating. On paper, both SUVs should have very similar specifications. Kia estimates that zero to sixty should be under 5 seconds and a maximum range of over 300 miles should be achievable.

With Lucid somewhat following Tesla's launch plan, the large, premium SUV is next. The 2024 Lucid Gravity is a three row SUV aiming to bring the premium look and feel of the Air into a larger package. We expect a six figure price tag and a slightly reduced range due to the additional mass and size.

2024 Porsche Macan Electric
Unlike the ID.4 and the Q4 e-tron, the Macan Electric will reside on an entirely new electric platform, dubbed the PPE (Premium Platform Electric). The Macan Electric should go around 300 miles on a charge and feature the same 800V battery tech as in the Taycan. Little is known about this vehicle yet, but the design and size should be similar to the ICE Macan.

2022 VW ID.5
The ID.5 is the coupe version of the ID.4. The motors and batteries will be the same, and the only difference will be a sloped roof yielding a more aerodynamic design. There's also going to be a performance "GTX" variant with 302 horsepower. Zero to sixty in the GTX should be around six seconds.

2024 Volkswagen ID.6
The ID.6 is Volkswagen's larger EV, and it is potentially going to be the least expensive, practical (sorry Model Y) third-row electric SUV. The AWD variant of the ID.6 is set to make around 302 horsepower, which is adequate, but not notable for a ~5,000 lb SUV.
From certain spy shots, it appears that the interior is quite similar to the ID.4, but we expect some minor changes. Its target is the Chinese market, but some speculate it'll eventually hit the U.S. market.

2024 Volvo EX90
The 2024 Volvo EX90 is a large electric SUV sharing its underpinnings with the Polestar 3. Compared to the 3, the EX90 will have a lower starting price and offer slightly less horsepower on the base model. Equipped with a 111kWh battery pack, the EX90 will have a range of around 300 miles. Mated to the battery pack are two drivetrains, 402 or 496-horsepower dual motor setups. Besides the power, the EX90 has Lidar onboard to help with driver assistance features.
